Beginner Back to Basics Yoga Series
4-Week Series | March 31 – April 21. This thoughtfully designed series is perfect for beginners looking to build a strong foundation for a safe and effective yoga practice. It’s also ideal for seasoned yogis who want to refine their practice by revisiting the fundamentals. Week 1 (March 31st): This week we’ll cover essential movement and breathing! By practicing specific targeted exercises, we can assess your flexibility and strength, and better understand your areas for improvement as well as your strengths and how these relate to your yoga practice. Breathing is the primary pillar of all yoga practices! You will learn different breathing exercises to help connect mind with body facilitating a mindful yoga practice as well as a more mindful way of living! Week 2 (April 7th): This week we’ll practice gentle backbends and twisting postures! Yoga backbends offer a range of physical and emotional benefits, including: improving posture, strengthening the back and core muscles, stretching tight hip flexors, opening the chest and shoulders, relieving stress, boosting energy, improving spine mobility, and promoting better breathing. Backbends are often described as heart openers due to their potential to stimulate emotional openness and connection. Not only can the spine bend, it can also twist! Twisting poses offer a wide range of benefits. A few of these include improved flexibility in your spine, which can help with back pain and stiffness; twisting poses strengthen your core and spinal muscles, improving your posture and alignment; twisting poses can help with digestion; and last, but not least, twisting poses help reduce stress and improve mental clarity. Week 3 (April 14th): This week we’ll practice Warrior poses! The Warrior poses that practice include Warrior 1, 2, and 3. As well as Reverse Warrior and Humble Warrior. Warrior poses are the most iconic yoga asanas! They are powerful and a bit complex, and this class is designed to help you understand the fundamental components of the Warrior poses and learn about their many benefits! Week 4 (April 21st): In our final class of this series we will break down the poses in Sun Salutations! There are MANY benefits to practicing Sun Salutations, including warming up your body, raising your heart rate, toning your muscles, improving flexibility, boosting your immune system, integrating breath and movement, reducing stress and anxiety, and boosting your energy. The last part of class we will incorporate/intergrate some of the poses we learned in this series with Sun Salutations to create a short sequence to practice together! $60 for all 4 weeks, a drop-in rate of $20 or the option to use a class card. You may pay for the series at the start of class with a check, cash, or Venmo. If you are not a class card holder and plan to pay for a drop-in class, please complete your payment before the start of class.

Beginner T’ai Chi Ch’uan at 5 pm
Beginner Tai Chi for 4-week sessions. The cost is $60 per 4-weeks. Next session starts May 1st. For the best experience, we encourage attending classes consecutively. Tai Chi is a gradual practice, and while this session offers an introduction, mastering the full form may take up to a year. This introductory series will help you decide if Tai Chi aligns with your wellness journey. T’ai Chi Ch’uan is indeed an ancient Chinese martial art, yet one firmly rooted in relaxation and mindfulness, absolutely not the use of force (“using 4 oz. to deflect 1,000 lbs.”). The practice is therefore often referred to as “moving meditation,” a regular, slow-moving form involving a sequence of postures performed in a relaxed but very mindful manner. Most who practice, both in China and in the United States, are therefore more concerned with improved health, greater vitality and calmness, the release of stress and tension, and balanced strength. This will be the focus of this beginning Westport Island class. T’ai Chi does require regular attendance and regular practice, if only for a few minutes every day — “improving daily by the thickness of a sheet of paper,” which accumulates to a substantial volume. The form involves a sequence of 37 postures, which will be taught sequentially over time, each following from the ones preceding. The style of T’ai Chi Ch’uan we will follow is known as the Yang Short Form, developed by Professor Cheng Man Ch’ing, who learned the ancient art of T’ai Chi from the Yang family master Yang Cheng-fu in the 1920’s. A celebrated professor of Chinese Medicine in both mainland China and then Taiwan, Cheng Man Ch’ing (often referred to simply as The Professor) brought this form of T’ai Chi to New York City in the early 1960’s, leaving a senior student (Mr. Lu) in charge of the Taiwan School and bringing another senior student (Ben Lo) to teach T’ai Chi in San Francisco. All three now have senior students throughout the country, all from this same tradition. Within that tradition, Nick Pagon has practiced T’ai Chi for over 20 years, having initially learned the form from Maggie Newman, a senior student of the Professor in NYC, now in her late 90’s, along with some of her more senior students. He has also studied with Lenzie Williams, Ben Lo’s senior student in Berkeley, and Wei Ming, Mr. Lu’s senior student in Taiwan. A minimum of 4 participants is required for the class to take place.
